ODBC Rowers Show Team Strength at Occoquan ChaseTuesday, October 18, 2016 - News - Ideal weather combined with remarkable team performances from the Old Dominion Boat Club (ODBC) womenís and menís 8s on the 3-mile course at the 24th Anniversary Occoquan Chase Regatta on Sunday, Oct. 16. Sundayís races were a tune-up before Club rowers enter a series of prestigious national regattas over the coming weekends.
The ODBC womenís first 8 boat powered their way to a 2nd place finish in the 30-boat womenís junior 8 category with a time of 18:31.53, 5 seconds behind Resilient Rowing Club and over 5 seconds ahead of 3rd place Thompson Boat Center (TBC) Racing. TC Williams senior Katie Murphy summed up the battle on the water. ďOverall, we had a very solid race and had a good rhythm this weekend. Resilient is a competitive team and we look forward to racing them again.Ē
The ODBC womenís second and third 8 boats also had very competitive races, finishing 6th and 7th, respectively. ODBC womenís head coach Patrick Marquardt said ďthe girls first 8 did a great job placing 2nd overall and I'm really impressed with our 2V8s and 3V8s coming in ahead of all second 8s.Ē
The 3 ODBC menís 8s also faced a field of talented, local competitors in the menís junior 8 category, which included 31 boats from 13 clubs and schools. The ODBC first 8 men finished 3rd with a time of 17:14.30, behind 2nd place TBC and 1st place Gonzaga. The ODBC menís second and third 8s also had strong races, finishing 11th and 12th. Of the menís crew programs with 3 boats in Sundayís race, only ODBC finished with all 3 boats in the top half.
Starting this weekend, ODBC rowers and top boats from the Chase will compete in races at 3 esteemed national events. On October 22-23, ODBC menís and womenís first 8s travel to Boston for the Head of the Charles, which will include 11,000 athletes and some of the best crew teams in the world. On October 29-30, ODBC crews head to Philadelphia for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, where over 8,000 athletes will compete. On November 5-6, ODBC rowers travel to Chattanooga, TN for the Head of the Hooch Regatta, which regularly features 2000 boats.
