King's Head Regatta
The ODBC fall racing season got off to a great start on
September 26th as the sculling team competed in the King's Head Regatta
in Philadelphia. ODBC brought home two silver medals. In the High School
Singles division Mariya Savchyn finished with a time
of 21:32.21 and Ryan Flint in the men's race with a time
of 19:23.78. The ODBC men put in a strong team showing, finishing 2,3,4
& 5 & 9. Zach Link finished third (19:26.58),
Bryan Wells 4th (19:27.66), Sergio Romero 5th
(19:35.21) and Andrew Stiles (21:57.50). Congratulations
to all of the rowers and to Coach Jaime Rubini for his silver medal in
the Senior Masters Singles event. It takes a lot of stamina to row 3 miles
in a single!

The Occoquan Challenge
The Orange & Black had reason to be proud of their
time in The Challenge. The men finished 1st and 3rd in the Junior
Eight event beating the Occoquan teams and others from the Tidewater,
Hampton Roads, and Western Pennsylvania. The winning time was 14:34:00
beating Northern Virginia Rowing Club's top eight by 18 seconds.
Find the foto below of the champs with the Eric Rothstein Cup, named in
honor of the late Thomas Jefferson HS coach. An ODBC light eight
was formed from the two men's eights and they went out for another
race. They finished 3rd behind the Naval Academy and ahead of the
University of Delaware. Two ODBC Women's eights went up against
17 other crews and also finished in the top group. They finished
2nd to a Northern Virginia Rowing Club crew and 5th behind Pennsylvania's
Prendie and Taylor Allderdice crews. The ODBC Scullers also fared
well. In a field of 12 men, Zack Link grabbed 3rd place behind
two Fairmount scullers for the Junior Single event. Zack had a time
of 18:40.00. Arriving in 7th place was Bryan Wells (19:22.00)
followed by Michael Noll (9th) and Andrew Stiles (11th).
Two ODBC women raced this day and finished 1st and 2nd in the Women's
Junior Single event. Mariya Savchyn grabbed gold with a time
of 21:48.00 and she was followed to the finish line by Abby Martin
(22:34.00) All in all a good showing for Team ODBC and coaches
Stramese, Hott, Street, Hearding and Jaime Rubini. Next week, The
Chase!

The Occoquan Chase
The team did not compete at The Chase. A tragic highway
accident that morning injured some members of the women's sweep team and
took the life of rower Laura Lynam (TCW '05). May she
rest in peace.

The Head of the Schuylkill
The regatta is one of the largest in the country and the
competition showed it. The men's sweep team took 15th and 33rd out
of 80 scholastic men's entries. The women took 22nd and 43rd out
of 71 scholastic women's entries. The ODBC single scullers finished
9th (Ryan Flint), 10th (Zach Link) and 16th (Sergio Romero)
on the men's side out of 29 entries and 6th (Abby Martin) out of
11 women entries. |
The Head of the Occoquan
The final regatta of the season proved to be a winner for
ODBC Select Crew. The Orange & Black men took 1st and 8th place
out of 15 crews racing youth eights. The "A" boat
beat Thompson's and NVRC crews, among others, who just the previous week
had bested ODBC. Sweet time! The ODBC women also
did well, finishing 5th and 8th in a field of 22 crews. The competition
was local and from the Tidewater, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Abby
Martin took silver with her strong performance in the youth singles
event.
