ODBC Select Fall Crew 2007
The Old Dominion Boat Club, the birthplace of high
school rowing in Alexandria, is proud to sponsor the eighth season of
competitive crew for Northern Virginia high school rowers. This is
a select program, and seats are selected by tryouts.
Coaches this year are Mike Porterfield and
Peter Hearding. Mike, who coaches the girls crew, was a
member of the US National Team and rowed in five World Championships.
In 2002 he coached the US women's pair to a bronze medal in the Sydney
Olympics. Peter, returning for his second year at ODBC boys coach,
has coached boys crew at TC Williams for six years. Both rowed at TC
during their high school years.
For the 2007 season, the ODBC Crew will row at these
elite events:

The boys A eight and boys four both won their events at the
season's first head race. The boys B eight was
fourth. The girls eights finished third and
fifth. Results are posted on the Ronin
site, but are only partially correct: the names of the coxes
on the boys boats are reversed, and the ODBC girls are
listed as Alexandria Community Rowing. Here are the

In the fours race, ODBC placed 2nd, sandwiched between two
Gonzaga fours and beating out crews from Fairfax, Thompson's
and Juniper (Great Bridge). |

| The boys eight - cox Ian
Waterhouse Terrell, Patrick O'Malley, Stephen Silverstein,
Ellis Carpenter, David Kahan, Paul Blakeslee, Kieran Merek,
Dominic Condello, Mac Johnson - took 10th place
with a time of 15:52.948. Coach Peter Hearding
called it "a great race."
"They had a row they were
all happy with," Hearding said, "beating Thompsons by the widest
margin yet" (13.114 sec). He said the commentator on
the internet webcast pointed out the ODBC crew looking
strong in the middle portion of the race and noted the
"great line that Ian took all the way down the
course," passing several boats along the way.
"Ian absolutely killed the turn coming under the Eliot
Bridge, which is a full 180 degrees by the time you get all
the way around and leads into the last 700-800 meters of the
race," he said.
"I'm as proud as can be - it is a really special bunch of
kids. This group won the Head of the Potomac, won the
Occoquan Chase and now placed 10th at the largest regatta in
the world. I can't wait to see what they're capable of in
Philly and the Head of the Occoquan."

November 4 (Sunday) |
| What a finish to the
season! The boys "A" eight continued their
winning ways, and clocked the fastest time of any boat in
the two days of the regatta, 3 seconds faster than the
best college eight. This time they beat the second
place boat, from Thompson Boat Center, by a full 30
seconds, and third-place Gonzaga by 50 sec.
The boys "B" eight finished 18:02.918, but
had 30 seconds added on for a buoy violation and finished
in 12th place. The boys four placed fifth in a field
of eighteen.
On the girls side, the "A" eight captured
second place in only their second race of the season, 20
seconds behind winner Thompson Boat Center. The
girls "B" eight was 14th in a field of 26.
The Head of the Occoquan is a two-day regatta, with
competitors
from colleges, rowing clubs, high schools and youth rowing
teams.
